A level C Ranking and East Anglia League (EAL) event. Also part of the SWELL League 2014/15 (event #3) plus ESSOL (Essex and Suffolk Schools Orienteering League).

As the event is on Remembrance Sunday, starts will be suspended at 11am for two minutes as a sign of respect.

2014 being the centenary of the start of World War I (WW1), a WW1 trail will be set out on the Yellow course. Note, yellow course entrants, who are competing in any of the leagues, should complete their course first before following the trail.

Directions / Parking

Free parking at the Beacon car park in Dry Street, Langdon Hills, near Basildon, Essex. The car park is adjacent to the B1007 which runs north-south between the A127 & A13 dual carriageways.
Toilets 300m from NE corner of car park field. Dogs welcome if under control.

From M25 Junction 29: Head east along the A127 towards Southend for 6 miles. Take the slip-road at the Dunton interchange and turn right onto the B148 (West Mayne). Turn right at the first roundabout (with the clock) onto the B1036, signed Superstore (Tesco) then left at the next roundabout. Continue for about 1 mile then turn right at the roundabout, signed Langdon Hills then right again at the next roundabout. After passing through Langdon Hills village, turn right at the T junction onto the B1007 (Staneway). Pass the Harvester restaurant and in 250m turn left onto Dry Street then right into the car park.

From M25 Junction 30: Head east along the A13 towards Southend for 5 miles. Take the slip-road at the junction for the B1007 (Horndon-on-the-Hill) and turn left. Follow the B1007 for 4 miles. Turn right, just after the church seen on the left, onto Dry Street then right into the car park.

Nearest railway station is Laindon about 1 mile from the car park. 

Facilities

Toilets 300m from NE corner of the car park across Dry Street. Start and Finish will be close to the car park. The Harvester, 300m from the car park, offers meals and takeaways from 9am.

Terrain Description

Map 1:10,000, with updates, autumn 2014.
Courses overprinted either on waterproof paper or bagged.

The area is divided into six sections separated by roads, housing and farmland. The terrain includes mature woodland, open and semi-open areas with significant hills (for Essex).

Registration: 10:00 am to 12:00 noon. 
Starts: 10:30 am to 12:30 pm
Courses close: 2:30 pm

White, Yellow, Orange, Light Green, Short Green, Green, Blue and Brown.
A course suitable for all abilities. Help available for beginners. This year, being the centenary of the start of World War I (WW1), a WW1 trail will be set out on the Yellow course. Entry Details

Seniors £7 (£2 surcharge for non-British Orienteering members.)
Juniors £2.50.
Electronic punching will be used at this event – SI ‘dibber’ hire fee 50p.
Pairs and groups pay one senior fee only but should take only one map.
Entry fees include car parking, levies and access charges.
