Info

Spiral O event in the town of Brentwood, which sits on one of the main Roman Roads from London to East Anglia, and is approximately 20 miles from the centre of London.  Mostly on street running, with some route choice in local woods and parks.  Maprun based, with controls located on fire hydrant signs and other street furniture.

Event 3 of the HAVOC Twilight Series 2025.  The series will consist of three events, each with a specific score format.  Each event will have one course, with two time limits - Long (60 mins) and Short (40 mins).  Points will be awarded for each control visited (specific course rules may apply on different events), and then adjusted using an age/gender handicap system.  Bonus points for running on the night compared to Anytime.  Full results will be emailed via RaceSignUp and published on the HAVOC website.

Participation is at your own risk.  Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult. Bring clothing and footwear appropriate for the weather conditions.  As with any street orienteering you are required to cross roads and you are asked to take due care and attention at all times.  High visibility clothing is strongly recommended. There may be dog walkers, cyclists or residents on pavements and footpaths – be aware and give them priority.  Some roads do not have pavements so take extra care.  As this event will take place in the twilight, a head torch or similar may be required if you are starting later in the start window.

Terrain Description

Map OOM V3 urban   Scale 1:10,000

Controls will be fire hydrants; will likely also use other street furniture or home made signs.  Course will be mainly on streets, with the possibility (depending on route choice) of utilising local parks or woods.

Registration & Start Times

Start at times between 6.30pm and 7.30pm.  Competitors must report to the finish by 9pm.

Course Information

One Line course.
Two time limits - Long (60 mins), Short (40 mins)

Controls must be taken in order, as shown on the map.  However, in order to return to the finish within the time limit you will need to judge how far along the line you go before returning.  As the course is shaped like a spiral the further you go along the line, generally, the further from the finish you will be!

Controls are valued based on the first digit of the control number (i.e. 10-19 are worth 10 points, 20-29 are worth 20, 30-39 are worth 30 etc).  Time penalties are imposed if you are late back to the finish.  Time bonuses are given if you finish early.

Most controls will be fire hydrant H plates (some may be homemade), or other street furniture.  If the MapRun app does not correctly record your visit to a control, for the fire hydrant signs you need to record the lower number, for other street furniture the map will make the details required clear.
