Controller's Comments

"I hope competitors enjoyed Langdon Hills on a mild and calm winter's day. Tim Jones did a good job providing technically and physically challenging courses. Several commented that there was too much climb so I thought a response was needed. The area is hilly and so greater than average climb was likely on most courses. It is also divided into three distinct woods which made it unlikely that ideal course lengths could be achieved on all courses. Blue, Green and Light Green courses were longer than ideal when account is taken of the climb. This was considered acceptable as it enabled these courses to reach the second wood (Old Hill) where there was scope for more technically difficult controls navigating between earth features in a trackless wood. The resultant unadjusted course lengths were all well within the maxima in the BOF Rules. Some adjusted course length ratios were higher than the suggestions in Event Guideline B but that enabled you to get to more controls of the correct difficulty (TD5).

There were several issues on the day caused by the windy week we have just had. A large windblown tree was found blocking the path between the last control on most courses and the Finish. A taped route around it was set out and most people avoided it with little difficulty. The ranger also set to work with his bowsaw and the path was re-opened by mid morning. The second complication related to private boundary fences having been blown down in the vicinity of control 167 (re-entrant). This meant that the boundary between the country park and the private land was no longer clear on the ground. Several competitors strayed onto the private land which was marked on the map as out of bounds. The owner complained and a decision was taken to remove that control so that no further orienteers would stray. Consequently the legs to and from control 167 were voided on courses Light Green, Green, Blue and Brown. The results published include this adjustment."
