Organiser's Comments
As I was involved in most of the aspects of the event, it falls on me to make
a few remarks.
It was very pleasing to see 70 or so young people at the event and congratulations
to all those who took part. On your behalf I would like to thank your teachers
and parents for encouraging you and for bringing you to the championships. Most
people got round their courses successfully although a few were very keen to
sprint to the finish and missed punching the last control and so received an
"mp" - mis-punched. Better luck next time.
The winners received their medals at the presentation and I hope they and everyone
else enters next year's competition; the date and venue are to be arranged.
Although we had to endure the strong wind, which brought a strange smell over
the car park, we were fortunate the rains kept away. I hope you were able to
enjoy the views and flowers that Hadleigh Country Park has to offer which I
hope compensated a little for the limited technicality on the longer courses.
Those competitors who did get to sample some of the "forest" will
know why planning and running on the area is difficult. Currently a new visitor
centre or "Hub" is being built to the north east of the area. That,
with the new trails and opening up of the redesigned Olympic course, is primarily
for mountain bikers and cyclists. When all the work has finished, we will have
to see if the area is any better or worse for orienteering. Does anyone have
any experience of MTBO?
Finally a "thank you" to my band of helpers which was reduced in number
owing to illness and other commitments. Hence I stepped in at Registration which
was not as efficient as HAVOC's normal service. HAVOC's next event is an Introduction
to Orienteering on 21 June followed a week later by a slightly more formal event
incorporating the CHIG Champs. Both events are at Thorndon Country Park (South).
