I am pleased to say we were overwhelmed by the turnout on Sunday! Most people
appreciated Graham’s courses. There were some hurried last minute changes when
the cattle enclosure on Chingford Plain was moved the week before the event.
Unfortunately because of the unexpected high turnout on the day we quickly ran
out of course maps for the longer technical courses and I am extremely grateful
to those competitors who kindly donated their maps so others could have a run.
This shows the true spirit of orienteering.
I thought I was being optimistic in expecting about 200 entrants but on the day
we had 290 which stretched our resources. I have emailed JPEG versions of the
course maps to those people who requested them. However, one or two email
addresses do not seem to be working properly. So, if anyone still wants a copy
of their course map, please email me your course colour and I will send you the
file.

Janet Biggs and I shared the controlling following the withdrawal of the
original external controller. Janet did the early work in helping Graham refine
his draft courses. They both responded well to the late changes enforced on some
courses due to the cattle grazing areas being shifted at a late stage in the
planning.
I took over the controlling on the Saturday and found no problems with Graham’s
control sites and setting out arrangements. The high turnout upset our map
printing estimates which were based on the attendance at a sunny event same time
last year with some allowance for the HH championships. 50% extra attendance was
not expected though the map recycling spirit ensured all got a run on the course
they wanted. Janet has explained that we will gladly provide map recyclers with
JPEG maps electronically. If you prefer a paper copy in the post just let us
know your address and course and we will gladly do that instead.
