OFFICIALS' COMMENTS

It turnout to be a very pleasant day for a spot of orienteering. It nearly did not happen as my alarm did not go off. Fortunately I woke up with just enough time to get myself ready and get over to Thorndon South to put out the first batch of controls before my helpers arrived.

Thank you for your encouraging comments. Many competitors said they enjoyed their course and others gave me some feedback. There were one or two issues concerning the mapping and in particular the location of rootstock 160 on the Blue, Green and Light Green. As the site had been used at previous events I did not check the mapping in that area. But, it does appear that the rootstock is further to the southwest than mapped. We must remember to correct it as necessary.

I believe one or two less experienced people had problems when they followed other runners. It is a hard lesson to learn but you need to think that all other competitors are not on your course and try to ignore what they are doing. Also, just to remind you that it is the competitor's responsibility to make sure he/she punches correctly. Please ensure you leave your dibber in place long enough to receive the light flash and beep.

Congratulations to all the new club champions in CHIG and DFOK.

My thanks go to Rachel Cooper and Doug McTurk for helping put out and check controls on the day. Also to Graham Batty for both controlling and organising; a misunderstanding lead to the necessity for a late change in the officials. The event was kept running by HAVOC's team of volunteers:, Gillian Edgar, Dale Bennett, Paul and Barbara Beckett, Tony Biggs, Colin Jackson, Rob Enderby, Guy Lidbury, Garry Parmenter and Chris Shaw.

If you have any comments about the event or would like to know more about membership of HAVOC, please email me.

NOTE: We used AutoDownload for the first time to produce the results at this event and are experiencing a few problems with it. Please let me know if you spot any errors in the results. Also, we are having problems setting up RouteGadget.

LOST PROPERTY: A pair of blue framed sunglasses with a neck cord were handed in. The sunglasses are small, probably a child's. Contact Janet Biggs to make a claim.
